Women's Health

Lately, I’ve found myself drawn to books and articles that promise to unpack the concept of “burnout.”

Turn Off the Hustle • Not sure who needs to hear this, but you have permission to relax—seriously. Believing that R&R is a waste of time is associated with less happiness and more depression, anxiety, and stress, says a new study in Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. The hyper-focus on hustling “keeps us on a never-ending treadmill of expectations that prevents us from experiencing the present moment,” says psychotherapist Sheenie Ambardar, MD. Trouble unwinding? Remind yourself that everything you do doesn’t need to have a purpose or a goal, she says. One sure-fire way to recharge is by unplugging from email and social media in favor of spending time with those you love, especially when nothing’s on the agenda. Or schedule solo time to catch up on a mood-boosting TV show. Ted Lasso binge, anyone?

Your Brain on Exercise • This just in: The next fitness sesh you have on tap will do more than hit muscles—it strengthens your mind too. And even on much-needed rest days, everyday activities that offer intense movement, like raking leaves, will help you fire on all cylinders, according to Shannon O’Neill, PhD, a psychologist at Mount Sinai Hospital. Causes for a cranium celebration:

Bump It Up • HOW WH ASSOCIATE EDITOR JENNIFER NIED SET NEW, UNEXPECTED FITNESS GOALS WHILE EXPECTING.

Sweat Sense • If we gave you a quick pop quiz on the fitness terms mobility and flexibility, you’d probably say they have something to do with stretching. Wait…er, warming up and cooling down. Or maybe they’re actually the same thing? (*Phones a trainer friend*) There are actually major distinctions between the two, and understanding the differences might end up being the reason you see gains versus pains. If you don’t have both mobility and flexibility, your body can’t run, move, lift, and push to its fullest potential, period. Your cheat sheet is below—seriously, rip this out and stash it in your gym bag—courtesy of certified strength and conditioning specialist Daniel Giordano, DPT, of Bespoke Treatments.

Down to Earth • Get to know these in-season goods from the ground, high in antioxidants and big on flavor. Introducing five (sometimes) hidden heroes…

Allergy Alt

Amanda Kloots • The Talk cohost, fitness expert, and Dancing With the Stars alum has spent the past 17 months reimagining her life following the death of her husband, Broadway star Nick Cordero, in 2020. With grit and grace (and a next-level vision board strategy), she’s making new goals a reality

On Her Vision Board

Recovery Design • Once-simple tasks—like raising your arm to put on a shirt—can become daunting and painful after surgery or a hospital stay. Whether you’re working around PICC lines and ports, or just dealing with new forms of discomfort, these fresh brands bring a sense of ease and control (and style!) to patient-centric clothing.

Good Questions

Taking Care of Business • For Sallie Krawcheck, CEO and cofounder of the female-focused financial platform Ellevest, the a.m. hours are about investing in her own well-being—whether it’s an outdoor exercise sesh or a brain game with her bro. Read on for her totally relatable two cents.

Smart Pups

Acid Reign • EXCELLENT EXFOLIATORS, BREAKOUT BUSTERS, FINE-LINE FIGHTERS… THESE CHEMICALS ARE THE MULTITASKERS YOU NEED IN YOUR SKIN-CARE ROUTINE.
